Wow I just found your blog and it’s so helpful and insightful for me! I just started my first blog just over 1 month ago… it’s been a big learning curve learning what is SEO, keywords, marketing, hymn etc haha but I am loving the process so far and I am so happy with what I have achieved so far .

Hey Leslie,

Do some research to figure out what kind of traffic the big blogs in this niche gets. If you can find a few websites with over 1 million pageviews – yes. Then the niche has potential. But some niches don’t have the potential to reach that amount. Like a skateboarding blog – that can reach a maximum of 10k pageviews a month if lucky.

I don’t just judge based on the ad network they are with because they could have used Pinterest to get that 100K pageviews a month and joined Ad Thrive. Once Pinterest stopped working for bloggers, their traffic may have dropped. This has happened to a few bloggers I know. I know a blogger who preferred Pinterest over SEO. Got 50K sessions, and got into MediaVine. At the moment, she’s barely getting 1.5K pageviews a month.

So, plug the website into a tool to see how much traffic the website gets. Judge the potential thoroughly before picking the niche. Anything over 100K and you’re good to go.

If you are comfortable taking a website to 10-20K and then just living off the ad revenue or you see that there’s solid affiliate marketing potential – go for it.

Thanks for sharing Angela! I’m considering starting a new blog that has low competition for a lot of keywords but those keywords only have a search volume of 80-200. I think I have the opportunity for affiliate income but wondering if those numbers will really build up an audience or not…though one competitor is on Ad Thrive so I’m assuming the potential is there! Do you think it’s worth entering a niche with low search volume but for a lot of low competition keywords?

Oh no Melanie, if you’re depending on ads and affiliate marketing, it is impossible. Unless you’re with some high-end affiliate marketing program that pays you $100 per sale or something. Or you’re selling your own services. That will definitely help you make that much.
